I haven’t considered how little history we have gone over in class getting swept up in class conversation but I think you bring up a valid point and an explanation would be nice. I wonder how much the Maine government has to acknowledge Wabanaki culture when it comes to passing legislation concerning sovereignty. Regardless of their culture they were here first and have a right as native people to the resources they have always had access to.

Hi! I definitely agree that it be a lot more helpful to actually talk about the history of the Wabanaki tribes in class and get some information from the teacher rather than just teaching ourselves and then immediately moving on in class to focusing entirely on the laws. It seems strange to me that we learn so much from Wiseman and then barely touch on it as a class. I also agree that its extremely embarrassing for the state of Maine how they treat their natives. The state doesn’t just ignore the cultural aspects of water issues but they were violating one of the basic human writes of the Passamaquoddy for 40 years by forcing them to use contaminated water.

I understand your sentiment about wanting to “learn” more in class but I do believe the discussions have been very informative. It does feel more like a research class than a history class. Wiseman has been educating us more on the history of the Wabanaki which has been refreshing. The legal documents are extremely relevant and help us learn in a very modern context which seems to be important.
