Journal Entry #3 Read pages 42-51 of They Say I Say
What is interesting, helpful, curious, or insightful about the chapter?
I always forget that not everyone knows how to write and properly format an essay. Most of the academic papers I’ve written have been for advanced classes. Those teachers specifically teach the students how to insert quotations and use language that makes us sound professional. There were the “hit-and-run” quotations, which is putting a quote in an essay, but not explaining what the quote means or why it was put in that specific place. Leaving a quote hanging with no explanation does massive disservice to the academic work and the audience as a whole since, as the book tells the reader on page 48, the quotation’s association to the essay is so clear to the writer, they expect the audience to follow their own train of thought. Unfortunately, most of the time, this will not happen, and instead the audience is left with a quote left in the middle of nowhere.
I also thought the exercises on pages 44-46 could be really interesting. The argument on gun control and how to format it could be good work. I’d actually like to see who does and doesn’t agree with the list style format. If we also discussed the subject matter, then maybe nobody would fall asleep before the end of class.
The templates and recommended verbs are a pretty good idea for examples. Actually, the book uses the templates like quotes, where they are inserted in the chapter then have a paragraph or two explaining what they are and how to use them.
